About Us

Probably one of the very first amateur sides and possibly one of the very oldest clubs to play competitive football in this country.

Although difficult to establish the exact date, it is believed the club has been in existence for almost 200 years

Interesting Note

Notts County FC, the oldest professional club in the football league over 100 years ago inherited their club colours, black and white stripes, from the famous Juventus of Italy. Leigh Town wore the black and white colours before Juventus were even heard of. They established their colours from their founders, the uniform of the Cannon of the local village church.

The team in those days mainly consisted of fishermen and cockle men. To this day members of the cockle industry are present in the team.

Tony Meddle M.B.E. our former chairman and now club president has been honoured for his services to the fishing industry and also for his involvement in charity work. Tony was responsible for reforming the club back in 1948/9 when returning from national service. This followed 17 years when the club had withdrawn from the Borough Combination after the departure of all their established players to Leigh Ramblers. The rams went on to win the premiership on three occasions and became Town's main rivals. It is now considered a local derby when the two teams meet

Below is the Town side that returned to the Borough Combination in 1950/1 including a young Tony Meddle. They wore the Arsenal style shirts in Town's black and white colours.

More recenty, Leigh Town won the Walton Cup in 2006 when they beat Old Southendian 2-0 in the final. The full story can be found on the Evening Echo website
